I'd give them 6 stars, but the system only goes up to 5! My family and I have been using Dr. Leavitt's Bayview Optometrics for close to 12 years. Most people think of optometrist's stores as places to get fitted for glasses and Bayview does in fact have an outstanding selection of quality frames, a knowledgeable staff and fair prices. But what set truly sets them "heads and tails" above anyone that we have visited, is the quality eye evaluations by Dr. Leavitt. In my particular case, after a routine exam, he diagnosed a serious eye condition long before it had any noticeable effect on my vision. The opthamologist that I ended up seeing told me the condition that Dr. Leavitt diagnosed was so subtle that even another opthamologist might have missed it. I got some great frames that day AND advance warning on a serious eye condition. It doesn't cost any more to see an experienced professional like Dr. Leavitt...but, if YOUR EYES are as important as your frames, Bayview is the only choice.

Children across the country are gearing up for a new school year. Before heading back to the classroom, the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends a visit to the optometrist. Healthy vision is an important part to the learning process and success in school. Reading, writing and computer work are among the visual skills that students are required to perform daily. However, studies show that 86 percent of children start school without ever having an eye examination.
Many experts believe that approximately 80 percent of learning comes through a child’s eyes. Despite the strong correlation between vision and learning, many Americans underestimate the number of children affected by eye and vision problems. According to the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) 2009 American Eye-Q® survey, which assesses public knowledge and understanding of a wide range of issues related to eye and visual health, 88 percent of respondents did not realize that one in four students have a visual impairment.

“Because a child’s vision may change frequently, regular eye and vision care is crucial to a student’s classroom success,” said Dr. Michael Earley, optometrist and the AOA’s vision & learning specialist. “Unfortunately, most parents are not including eye exams as part of their child’s back-to-school health check-up.”

According to the recent Eye-Q® survey, 58 percent of parents did not take their child for an eye exam until age three or older. The AOA recommends that children have their first eye assessment at six months of age, then comprehensive eye exams beginning at age three, before a child enters school, and then every two years, unless otherwise advised by an optometrist. In between visits to the eye doctor, parents, as well as teachers, should keep a watchful eye out for some of the more prevalent signs that a child’s vision may be impaired.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK Eye Surgery)- A VALID OPTION TO LASIK!

What is PRK?

PRK Eye Surgery (Photorefractive Keratectomy), is an elective, outpatient laser vision correction procedure to improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. In the PRK laser vision correction procedure, the laser surgeon utilizes the excimer laser to reshape the curvature of the eye for patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

Photorefractive Keratectomy has been performed since 1986. Prior to LASIK, PRK was the most commonly performed laser vision correction procedure. PRK differs from LASIK as no flap is created during the PRK procedure. PRK may be suitable for people with larger pupils, thin corneas, have other corneal issues or dry eyes.

Custom PRK

Custom PRK is a procedure that enables your laser vision correction surgeon to further customize the conventional PRK procedure to your individual eyes. Custom PRK provides an additional level of data about your vision requirements using wavefront technology. A device called a wavefront analyzer measures the way light travels through your eye and compares it to an eye with perfect vision. This device then creates a 3-D wavefront map that is uniquely yours, in the same way that your “fingerprint” is unique to only you. This additional data is then used by your PRK Surgeon to customize the PRK laser vision correction procedure to your individual vision requirements.

The actual PRK procedure process is performed the same way in both conventional PRK and Custom PRK. Conventional PRK is an excellent choice for many patients.

Your doctor will recommend which procedure is best for you based on your visual requirement; they will help you to determine if you could benefit from the higher level of customization that Custom PRK may provide.

The PRK Procedure

For the PRK laser vision correction procedure, no scalpels are used and no incisions are made. Prior to the procedure, an extremely detailed map of your eyes' surface is created by a computer and then used by your Laser vision correction PRK surgeon to calibrate the excimer laser to your exact prescription.

Once the laser has been properly calibrated, the technician will place an eyelid holder in your eye to keep it open throughout the procedure. The technician will put a few anesthetic drops in to numb the eye and prevent pain.

To accomplish the reshaping, the surgeon first removes the protective surface layer (epithelium) from the cornea. The epithelium is regenerated within three to five days.

Your PRK Surgeon will then smooth the area and proceed with applying computer controlled pulses of cool laser light to reshape the curvature of the eye. Deeper cell layers remain virtually untouched.

The PRK laser vision correction process is completed in approximately 30 to 60 seconds, and immediately afterwards, a clear bandage contact lens is placed on the cornea to protect it. Additional eye drops are applied. Since a layer about as slender as a human hair is typically removed, the cornea should maintain its original strength.

Often, only one eye is treated per surgery day, although your surgeon may decide to do both of your eyes on the same day.

PRK Recovery: After the Procedure

After the PRK laser vision correction procedure, your eye may feel irritation or a foreign body sensation for a few days, but this discomfort can usually be effectively managed with medication.

With PRK, prescription eye drops are used for several months following the procedure.

Post-operatively, PRK patients are placed on antibiotic drops, along with anti-inflammatory agents to promote comfort and reduce swelling. PRK patients are also fitted with a bandage contact lens to improve their comfort while their eye is healing. Once the epithelium is healed, usually on the second or third post-operative day, the bandage contact lens is removed by your doctor.

To complete the healing process, PRK patients use steroid anti-inflammatory drops for approximately two months under the direct supervision of your eye doctor.

Presbyopia is a condition where the eye exhibits a progressively diminished ability to focus on near objects with age. Presbyopia’s exact mechanisms are not known with certainty; the research evidence most strongly supports a loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens, although changes in the lens’s curvature from continual growth and loss of power of the ciliary muscles (the muscles that bend and straighten the lens) have also been postulated as its cause. Like gray hair and wrinkles, presbyopia is a symptom caused by the natural course of ageing. The first signs of presbyopia – eyestrain, difficulty seeing in dim light, problems focusing on small objects and/or fine print – are usually first noticed between the ages of 40 and 50.

Only with a comprehensive eye exams can we determine the best corrective lenses. Drugstore glasses make the assumption that both eyes are equal in power and that you do not have astigmatism.

Ever wonder what 20/20 vision actually means?

Visual acuity (VA) is acuteness or clearness of vision, which is dependent on the sharpness of the retinal focus within the eye and the sensitivity of the interpretative faculty of the brain.

Visual acuity is a measure of the spatial resolution of the visual processing system and is usually tested in a manner to optimise and standardise the conditions. To this end, black symbols on a white background are used (for maximum contrast) and a sufficient distance allowed to approximate infinity in the way the lens attempts to focus. Twenty feet is essentially infinity from an optical perspective (the difference in optical power required to focus at 20 feet versus infinity is only 0.164 diopters). Whilst in an eye exam, lenses of varying powers are used to precisely correct for refractive errors, using a pinhole will largely correct for refractive errors and allow VA to be tested in other circumstances. Letters are normally used (as in the classic Snellen chart) as most people will recognise them but other symbols (such as a letter E facing in different directions) can be used instead.

In the term "20/20 vision", the numerator refers to the distance in feet between the subject and the chart. The denominator is the distance at which the lines that make up those letters would be separated by a visual angle of 1 arc minute, which for the lowest line that is read by an eye with no refractive error (or the errors corrected) is usually 20 feet. The metric equivalent is 6/6 vision where the distance is 6 metres. This means that at 20 feet or 6 metres, a typical human eye, able to separate 1 arc minute, can resolve lines with a spacing of about 1.75mm. 20/20 vision can be considered nominal performance for human distance vision; 20/40 vision can be considered half that acuity for distance vision and 20/10 vision would be twice normal acuity. The 20/x number does not directly relate to the eyeglass prescription required to correct vision, because it does not specify the nature of the problem with the lens, only the resulting performance. Instead an eye exam seeks to find the prescription that will provide at least 20/20 vision.

Eye Care for People With Diabetes
Eye care is especially important for people with diabetes because they are at increased risk of developing eye complications from the disease. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults age 20 to 74.

All people with diabetes should take precautions to help reduce their risk of developing eye problems. Here are some eye care tips.

1.Schedule yearly appointments with your eye doctor so that any eye problem can be detected early and treated.
2.Maintain control of your blood glucose levels.
3.Keep your blood pressure in control. High blood pressure by itself can lead to eye disease, so if you have high blood pressure as well as diabetes, it is especially important that you take steps to control both conditions.
4.Get your blood cholesterol levels under control.
5.Eat a healthy diet.
6.Avoid smoking.
7.Exercise regularly.
When Should I Call the Eye Doctor?
If you have diabetes, you should make an appointment to see your eye doctor if you experience any visual problems or notice any changes in your vision. You should see your eye doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Blurring of vision
Black spots
Flashes of light
Partial or complete loss of vision in one or both eyes

About LASIK
LASIK is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. In LASIK, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. The surgeon folds back the flap, then removes some corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.

With nearsighted people, the goal of LASIK is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. LASIK can also correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.

If you are considering LASIK eye surgery, your first step is to see if you are a candidate for the surgery. We will examine your eyes to determine their health, what kind of vision correction you need, and how much laser ablation (corneal tissue removal) is required. Cape Cod Optometrist Fact:

A Marstons Mills woman came into the office with a contact lens emergency! She was considering LASIK and the ophthalmologist office off Cape Cod fitted her with contact lenses to demonstrate monovision. They showed her very quickly on the techniques of insertion and removal. They only had her try it once. In my office we require patients to put them in and remove 3 times before they can leave with their contact lenses. She came in yesterday afternoon with an irritated eye with a broken blood vessel hemorrhage in her conjunctiva. I assured her that she was fine and discussed her options. We are going to revisit a new bifocal/multifocal contact lens fitting. She will probably hold off on LASIK for the time being. In her situation the bifocal contact lenses will offer her more options than the monovision. She should do well and be very happy in the next week to come.

Four Key Facts About Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness
Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated. And unfortunately approximately 10% of people with glaucoma who receive proper treatment still experience loss of vision.

There is no cure (yet) for glaucoma
Glaucoma is not curable, and vision lost cannot be regained. With medication and/or surgery, it is possible to halt further loss of vision. Since glaucoma is a chronic condition, it must be monitored for life.

Diagnosis is the first step to preserving your vision.

Everyone is at risk for glaucoma
Everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens. Yes, older people are at a higher risk for glaucoma but babies can be born with glaucoma (approximately 1 out of every 10,000 babies born in the United States).

Young adults can get glaucoma, too. African-Americans in particular are susceptible at a younger age.

There may be no symptoms to warn you
With open angle glaucoma, the most common form, there are virtually no symptoms. Usually, no pain is associated with increased eye pressure.

Vision loss begins with peripheral or side vision. You may compensate for this unconsciously by turning your head to the side, and may not notice anything until significant vision is lost. The best way to protect your sight from glaucoma is to get tested. If you have glaucoma, treatment can begin immediately.

It is estimated that over 4 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it. (1)

Approximately 120,000 are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness in the U.S. (2)

About 2% of the population ages 40-50 and 8% over 70 have elevated IOP.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness among African-Americans. (2)

Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African-Americans than Caucasians. (3)

African-Americans ages 45-65 are 14 to 17 times more likely to go blind from glaucoma than Caucasians with glaucoma in the same age group.

The most common form, Open Angle Glaucoma, accounts for 19% of all blindness among African-Americans compared to 6% in Caucasians. (4)

Other high-risk groups include: people over 60, family members of those already diagnosed, diabetics, and people who are severely nearsighted.

Estimates put the total number of suspected cases of glaucoma at around 65 million worldwide. (5)
